§ 2-648. Notice to owner; notice of sale.

  • (a)

    The director of finance shall mail a notice by certified mail to the last known address of the owner of the property held pursuant to this division. Such notice shall describe the property being held, shall give the name and address of the officer holding the property, and shall state that if the owner does not claim the property within 90 days from the date of the notice the property will be disposed of and the proceeds, after deducting the reasonable cost of keeping the property and selling it, shall be placed in the general fund of the city.

    (b)

    If the property has a fair market value of $500.00 or more and the owner or the address of the owner is unknown, the director of finance shall cause to be published in the official newspaper of the city a general description of the property held, the name of the owner if known, the name and address of the officer holding the property, and a statement that if the owner does not claim the property within 90 days from the date of publication the property will be disposed of and the proceeds, after deducting the reasonable cost of keeping the property and selling it, shall be placed in the general fund of the city.

    (c)

    Twenty-one days' notice of the time and place of the sale and a descriptive list of the property and motor vehicles or both to be offered for sale shall be posted at the city hall, shall be published in the official newspaper of the city and a copy thereof shall be sent by registered mail to the last known address of the owner if the name of the owner is known to the director of finance.
